An industrial shot blasting machine is an automated machine used for the surface treatment of metals by mechanically propelling abrasive grit. The process, known as shot blasting, is used to clean, roughen or strengthen (shot peening) mechanical components within an automated production cycle.
There are various types of shot blasting machines:
- Monorail / continuous hook shot blasting machines: Ideal for suspended, bulky or delicate workpieces.
- Conveyor-belt shot blasting machines: For continuous feeding and mass production.
- Rotary table shot blasting machines: Perfect for large individual workpieces.
- Roller shot blasting machines: Specifically designed for sheet metal and metal profiles.
Shot blasting systems are used in numerous industrial sectors, including steelmaking, cast iron foundries, structural steelwork and machinery manufacturing.
Main Function | Industrial Benefit | Typical Application |
Descaling | Removal of oxides and rust | Steel industry, Structural engineering |
Coating Adhesion | Preparation for painting/galvanising | Automotive sector, Fasteners |
Shot Peening | Increased fatigue strength | Foundry, Aerospace |
How does the shot blasting process work?
A shot blasting machine works by propelling an abrasive material (known as shot) at high speed against the surface of an object, in order to clean it, roughen it or prepare it for subsequent treatments such as painting or metallisation.
The process is fully automated and takes place inside a sealed chamber, where the parts are moved by a conveyor system (such as belts, hooks, rollers or turntables) that exposes them evenly to the abrasive jet.
The operation of a shot blasting machine consists of three stages:
- Blasting: Centrifugal turbines propel the shot using centrifugal force. The shot strikes the surface of the workpieces, removing impurities such as rust, mill scale, paint or other residues.
- Impact: the abrasive strikes the surface of the workpiece uniformly through mechanical action. After striking the workpieces, the grit accumulates in the collection hopper and is conveyed via the elevator to the separator, which cleans the grit and returns it to the tank and from there to the turbines.
- Recovery: the system recycles the grit, separating the waste dust from the material that can still be used. The cleaned grit is then returned to the circuit for further processing cycles.

What are the benefits of a shot blasting process?
Shot blasting is an essential process for preparing metal surfaces, improving the mechanical performance of components and ensuring more effective subsequent machining, all in an efficient, sustainable and repeatable manner.

The shot blasting process offers numerous advantages, particularly in industrial sectors where it is essential to ensure the quality of metal surfaces prior to further processing.
Here are the main benefits:
1. Thorough cleaning of surfaces
Shot blasting effectively removes:
- Rust
- Scale (oxides formed during hot working)
- Old coatings (paint, oil, machining residues)
This results in perfectly clean and active surfaces, ready for further treatments such as painting, galvanising or bonding.
2. Improved adhesion of coatings
A rough, clean surface allows for better adhesion of paints, powders, primers or other protective coatings, thereby increasing the treatment’s durability and corrosion resistance.
3. Increased mechanical strength (Shot peening)
Shot blasting can also be used for mechanical purposes: a process known as shot peening serves to induce residual compressive stresses on the surface, thereby increasing the material’s fatigue strength and extending its service life. This is particularly important in components subjected to cyclic stress, such as springs, gears and drive shafts.
4. Consistency of results
Thanks to the automation of shot blasting machines, the treatment is consistent and repeatable, which is essential in large-scale production processes or those with high quality standards.
5. An environmentally friendly and cost-effective process
The grit used can be reused multiple times, and modern facilities are equipped with recovery and separation systems that minimise waste. Furthermore, no chemical solvents or toxic substances are used, making the process safer and more sustainable for both workers and the environment.
6. Versatility
The process can be adapted to workpieces of various sizes, shapes and materials. From heavy metal structures to small mechanical components, there is a type of shot blasting machine to suit every production requirement.
